Struggling with Despair

***Dear Family and Friends, the topics of suicide and despair have been weighing on my heart, so I felt motivated to write about it. The purpose of this post is to bring awareness to those who struggle, open the door for conversation, show how I have struggled, and to urge those struggling to seek help.***

Suicide is an irrational act. When one is rational s/he can see that suicide is not the answer or even a viable option. Committing suicide is like the ripples left by a rock dropped in a lake. The waves continue to ripple long after the stone has dropped leaving an everlasting effect on those left behind.
I can think of several times when not existing seemed preferable. I was overwhelmed with grief at the loss of our second child. Right after we learned of Ava’s death, living did not seem preferable. Why live when my child could not live? I talked to my husband who tried to understand but didn’t. He listened. Thankfully prayer got me through the night.
Losing Ava was very difficult. I just knew that pregnancy was going to be different from our first. I thought this meant we would meet our child. We saw her little body. We heard her weak heartbeat. We lost her. When Ava died her death set off a bomb of anger, depression, frustration, and loss. It took me months to regain semi-normalcy.
The second time I found myself in deep despair was several weeks after we lost Eve. School was done. We had spent the previous day traveling. I was exhausted, drained, and not at home. My husband was running an errand, and I was alone. I felt like I had been dropped into a chasm and left to be swallowed by the darkness. Thankfully a friend had texted and asked how I was doing. During the course of our conversation, we decided to be exercise accountability partners. I felt like I had a goal to strive for. Immediately following our conversation I got started and did yoga. It felt good to be engaged in a meaningful activity.
Grief can cause deep despair. In my despair I just wanted the pain to go away. I had thoughts of wanting to go away. To not exist. To not feel…pain...loss…loneliness. However, letting one’s grief or despair go unchecked can lead to suicidal thoughts or tendencies. While I struggle with my grief I know that my God, my family, my friends, and my counselor are available to talk and help.
Even though suicide is a taboo topic, we should be able to talk about it. People struggle and need help. If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Don’t wait. Call and talk about it. Your life is worth saving.

P.S. It is ok if you struggle/are struggling, and it is ok to get help.

Upping the Ante

One of the nice things about Ninja Park is that in addition to obstacles, there are a variety of classes one can take. Kristie and I enjoy Body Blast (BB) with Jessica, but we wanted to try her other class: Balance Enhancement and Core (BE&C). Wow! It makes her BB class look like a breeze. The exercises were similar, but the pace was breakneck. The BB class is an hour while her BE&C class is 30 minutes. There is no time for messing around. She is a task-master. The first time we took her BE&C class, we were tired but we survived.
Then we stayed for Josh’s Ninjacore class. Oh my goodness! We thought we were not going to survive. We do different obstacles or exercises for 45 seconds the first time and 23 seconds the second time. The obstacles are harder. The class is big:  8-10 people, so that is a lot of time on individual exercises. Thoughts of quitting crossed our minds…until we participated in the timed challenge. One thing I really appreciate about Ninjacore is the comradery and team mindset. Everyone cheered one another one, and we felt successful. We are going to continue mixing up the classes and exercise. We’ve got this!

Unfriend Facebook

While I enjoy your family
pictures,
little tikes
smiling, laughing, playing,
riding a bike,
asleep during nap time,
first day of school pictures,
loving life,
I am reminded
of my children
whose lives will never be.

As I focus on your life and its blessings,
I lose sight of my loving, adoring husband
who daily gives me the moon and stars,
holds my hand, comforts
me, makes me laugh and forget
my serious face, plans road trips,
and selflessly devotes himself to me.

I forget about the 101 Dalmatians
who drive me crazy, love me unconditionally,
shower me with puppy kisses
and dog hair, take to me to dog parks
and on walks, introduce me to new friends,
and entertain me with their antics.
Cinder’s spunky, happy self
and Ember’s loyalty
get lost in my discontent.

When I post I wonder how many friends
will like, comment on, or share
my thoughts, my life, or me.
Suddenly I am back in high
school striving to be popular
and perfect enough for people
to like me,
really, really like me.
Did I share just the right amount?
Will they crown me
Prom Queen?
How long will I rule?

I have 174 friends.
Surely we are great friends
and we communicate frequently by sending
notes in the mail just to say hi, texting or calling
to find out about each other’s day, meeting
for lunch or dinner, or stopping
by just to chat.

No, instead we just post our news,
our lives,
our drama,
our food,
our whatever,
and assume everyone informed themselves.

You and Facebook
are friends. Are you sure
you want to unfriend?

Body Prop & Ring Junction

Kristie and I are continuing to make our way around the gym. This post will feature footage of the body prop and ring junction.

The body prop and I are not good friends. I can get my body in position, hold it, and move a few steps. I need to get my feet higher.

The ring junction and I are becoming fast friends. It has four rings. Our goal is to go back and forth as many times as possible before our hands scream for release. Kristie and I have good form and momentum. I am proud of our work on the ring junction. (Coach is too!)

We are also working on the cargo net. Kristie is a beast and can climb over the net. Me? Not so much. I can get my right arm over and I have the bruises to prove it. We will keep working on it. Kristie doesn’t put up with my lame excuses…Until next time keep ninjasizing!
